It's Broken!!

I was hoping when we took Dasher to the vet this afternoon that her paw would only be bruised. One of her toes is broken so she will be wearing this splint for the next 4 weeks. I have to go back once a week to get it changed and to see how everything is healing. I am so sad. Dasher's having a hard time walking on but I think after a while she will get used to it.

For now, she is in the lap of Julianne, getting lots of love and attention. :-)

A Simple Woman's Daybook

For Tuesday, April 27, 2010

Outside my window...a simply gorgeous day: sunny, a few puffy clouds and 70 degrees

I am thankful…for my sisters in Christ who are an encouragement to me

From the learning rooms…debating whether to go to the convention this year

From the kitchen...easy peasy this week: Michael is in NYC so dinners will be casual

I am creating...I made some flannel cloths to use for warm compresses and I’m working on making some that are filled with flaxseed to use for sore necks, tummies, etc.

I am reading…still working through “A Praying Life”. (This may be up here a while)

I am hoping...that we get lots of thunderstorms this summer!

I am hearing…nothing but the sound of me typing

One of my favorite things…taking a nap on Sunday afternoon

Around the house...we are getting ready to have a fence installed so for the next few weeks Michael will be taking down the old one. I’m hoping next week to tidy up the yard.

A few plans for the rest of the week: vet appointment this afternoon; the contractor will be coming to measure for the fence; visiting Brooke; Fellowship Group; Julianne has a homeschool prom on Friday night; cleaning the church

Here is a picture (or two) I am sharing...my compress bags and some material to make more

Dasher's Paw

This is Dasher, our little dachshund. The other day a friend accidently stepped on her paw and she yelped. This weekend (and today) I noticed that it is swelling and she won't walk on it. She's still her cheerful self and she is eating fine. I was finally able to get an appointment at the vet for tomorrow afternoon......actually I have to go and wait between 4-5 pm so they can squeeze us in between appointments.
I hope she's ok.

A Find at Goodwill!

It's really out of tune but it looks brand new. I found several places where I can order the tuning wrench, a case and more music. I can't wait to learn to play this. I've always wanted one!

The Simple Woman's Daybook

For Tuesday, April 20, 2010

Outside my window...the street is very quiet this afternoon; no cars, no children. As far as I know, there are only myself and two others on my street who are not away working

I am thankful…for my husband’s job. God has been so gracious to us these 29+ years. As many around us lose their jobs, we are very thankful for God’s provision

From the learning rooms…I have a stack of papers I need to grade and am working on that now!

From the kitchen...I found a neat site called “A Year of Slow Cooking”. I plan to spend some time at this website looking over the recipes. I love my crockpot and can always use some inspiration!
I am pondering…what it means to live a simple life yet still be involved in ministry

I am creating...not a thing this past week. On the agenda are some new baby and birthday cards

I am reading…still working through “A Praying Life”

I am hoping...that this beautiful spring weather stays around for a long time. I’m not ready for humidity just yet!

I am hearing…Celtic music on my iPod.

One of my favorite things…Dr. Pepper. I tried stopping cold turkey and ended up with a nasty headache so now I’m gradually weaning myself.

Around the house...tumbleweeds of oak pollen are everywhere and I sweep it away everyday…sometimes twice a day!

A few plans for the rest of the week: nothing out of the ordinary this week other than an ortho and eye appointment. I would really like to finish up the deep cleaning if I can.

Here is a picture I am sharing... I went to Honduras in 2006 and 2007 to help out with our church's missionaries. A group from our church just got back and i was looking at their pictures and remembering the good times down there. This is Heidi, a dear friend and missionary, teaching the girls in her Sunday School class.

The Week Ahead

A look at my week:

Homeschooling--finish grading Spanish and History papers; other than that it's a typical week

Home--besides the usual chores of laundry and general homekeeping, I need to vacuum the filters, steam clean the floors in the hall bathroom and in our bedroom/bathroom. If I get the chance, I'd like to rake the back yard. We're putting in a fence! No more barking dogs! I'm so happy!!

Kitchen--I have a recipe for Indian Mango Chicken that I'd like to try. I'll let you know how it turns out. I also need to update my recipe blog. I did a few recipes last week (or the week before).

Not-Ordinary Days--Julianne has an ortho appointment to get her new retainer put on (her bottom teeth have shifted a little and need to be re-aligned); I have an eye appointment on Thursday and hopefully can have lunch with my hubby before I go; Saturday I'm having breakfast with a friend and Julianne is doing a photoshoot in the afternoon. Oh, and in a little while Julianne and I are going shopping for prom accessories: shoes, jewelry, etc.

Reading--well, I put all my other books on hold because a book that I had on hold at the library arrived. It is: The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. It's a fascinating book about a woman whose cells were taken from her without her consent and how those cells have been living ever since and contributing to science. Highly recommended!!

How is your week ahead coming together? I'd love to hear from you!

Not Miracle Workers

I found this great quote from Ruth Bell Graham, speaking about as parents we may be tempted to try to do God's work and to neglect the very responsibilities that He has given us.

"How often we have tried to convict our loved ones of their sin and their need of the Savior, to make them want God, to make them read their Bibles and to pray and to live for Him.

But our responsibility is to minister lovingly to the immediate needs of our families, whether it is providing a happy home, by preparing a good meal and washing clothes or by offering words of encouragement, love and appreciation.

And our responsibility is to pray.

God will do His part. Salvation and love for God, the willingness to come under His authority, and the longing to do His will joyfully are miracles of grace. And miracles are in God's department, not ours."

The Simple Woman's Daybook

For Tuesday, April 13, 2010

Outside my window...a Flicker is pecking at our maple tree and a Blue Jay is eating from our feeder.

I am thankful…that most of the pollen is gone; I don’t suffer from it but I know lots of people who do—including my children!

From the learning rooms…attended our co-op’s open house last week and now have next year figured out. Next thing: buying the books!

From the kitchen...groceries are stacked about and need to be put away!

I am pondering…Romans 12:1-2….I’m working on memorizing this.

I am creating...a Christmas quilt table runner…..started 2 years ago. A dear friend, and expert quilter, is helping me.

I am reading…still working through “A Praying Life”.

I am hoping...for the Lord’s quick return!

I am hearing…Snickers’ chain jingling; everything else is quiet

One of my favorite things…sheer white curtains being blown by a breeze

Around the house...spring cleaning is underway!

A few plans for the rest of the week: Post Office, orthodontist for Julianne, visiting Brooke, driving Michael to the airport (he’ll be in NYC for the weekend), Fellowship Group, working on spring cleaning

Here is a picture I am sharing... me, in the 5th grade! I'm wearing the blue dress :-)

Spring Break

We are on Spring Break this week and the weather has been wonderful. It was rainy on Monday but since then it has been sunny and in the 80's! And it's supposed to continue that way until next week. Whoo hoo!!

Yesterday we went to the local dog park to give Dasher some exercise. She seemed to enjoy it but there weren't many small dogs for her to play with. She took a long nap when she got home!

Jared is coming over to pick up Julianne this afternoon and take her back to his place for a few hours. He'll take her to karate where I will pick her up. He just pulled in the driveway!!

We didn't have much planned for this week; Julianne still has schoolwork to do--she's only on Spring Break from her co-op but has homework also. No rest for the weary.

Here's a few pictures:

I found these DVD's at Sam's Club. Scarecrow and Mrs. King is one of my favorite TV shows and I wondered if it would ever come out on DVD. I was so excited to see this. I've had fun watching it! It really is quite tame compared to today's standards but still very funny.

The girls made vegetarian pizza one night.

Yum!!

I don't like squirrels on my bird feeders but this little critter can visit anytime. Isn't he just the cutest thing???
